Josh Gibson, a black baseball player never allowed to play in the major leagues, dies at the age of 35. His unrecognized lifetime homerun tally is 960.

January 24
Canada’s plan to deport thousands of Japanese-Canadians to Japan two years after the end of the war is cancelled because of public protests.

January 25
Al Capone dies of syphilis.

January 29
Washington officially condemns both the Nationalist and Communist Chinese as a result of the civil war that is ravaging China.

The Dead Sea scrolls are discovered.

Edwin Land introduces the first Polaroid camera.

April 7
The U.S. Public Health Services announces the average age limit on white males to be 66 years and for black males 57 years.
Another survey this year shows 33% of U.S. families earn between $2,500-$5,000. annually.

Henry Ford dies.

Jackie Robinson is the first black baseball player in the major leagues.

Bernard Baruch coins the phrase “cold war”.

Princess Elizabeth, the future Queen of England turns 21.

The Marshall Plan to aid the recovery of war ravaged Europe is initiated. Churchill calls it "the most unsordid act in history".

Pan American Airways completes the 1st around-the-world passenger flight.

A private pilot, Kenneth Arnold, spots 9 saucer shaped discs in the sky while
flying. A subsequent report for the first time uses the phrase UFO (Unidentified Flying Object).

Bugsy Siegel is murdered in Beverly Hills, California.

August 15
After 346 years of British rule, India declares its independence.

September 1
The first World Series is telecast. The Yankees win over the Brooklyn Dodgers 4 games to 3.

October 1
William Levitt begins construction on Levittown, the first suburb, in Long Island. He will eventually build 17,447 homes. Blacks are excluded from purchasing the $7,000. homes.

October 14
Chuck Yeager breaks the sound barrier.

October 23
Julie Andrews makes her stage debut in London at the age of 12.

November 1
Princess Elizabeth marries Philip Mountbatten (Duke of Edinborough) in Westminster Abbey.

Tennessee Williams' play Streetcar Named Desire opens on Broadway.
It makes Marlon Brando a star.

Truman pardons 1,523 American World War II draft evaders.

Tide is the first hard-water detergent on the market.

Reddi-Wip is introduced.

Benjamin Spock’s book Pocket Book of Baby and Child Care becomes an instant best seller eventually being second only to the Bible in sales.
