March 14 Under the command of General Douglas MacArthur, the UN launches an offensive in Korea. March 29 Ethel and Julius Rosenberg are convicted of selling U.S. atomic secrets to Russia during World War II and are sentenced to death. The musical The King and I opens on Broadway. Fanny Brice dies. April 11 President Truman fires General MacArthur because of his insubordination and his desire to widen the Korean war into China expressly against official U.S. policy. June 14 UNIVAC is the first commercially sold computer. August 14 Newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst dies.
